Introduction

Look, I get it. You're excited about your new idea. So excited that you've already bought the perfect domain name. Trust me, I've been there โ€“ I became a serial domain hoarder before I became a serial founder.

Want to know something embarrassing? Out of the dozens of domains I purchased, most of them are now just collecting digital dust. Not because they weren't clever names (they were brilliant, if I do say so myself), but because I skipped one crucial step: validating product-market fit before diving in.

The Reality Check ๐Ÿ‘€

Here's the thing โ€“ we founders are optimists. We see problems and immediately jump to solutions. But after burning through time and money building products nobody wanted, I learned the hard way that enthusiasm isn't enough.

How to Use This Test

I wish I had this checklist before buying all those domains. No fluff, no complex frameworks โ€“ just 12 straightforward questions that will tell you if you're building something people actually want.

Instructions:

  • Set aside exactly 10 minutes
  • Answer each question with a brutal "yes" or "no"
  • No maybes allowed (trust me, "maybe" means "no")
  • Count your "yes" answers at the end
  • Use the scoring guide to know exactly what to do next

The Questions

๐Ÿง  Market Understanding ๐Ÿง

  1. Is your target user's problem painful enough that they complain about it regularly?

    • โœ… You should hear them mention this problem without prompting
    • โŒ If you have to explain why it's a problem, it's probably not painful enough
  2. Are potential users actively searching for a solution?

    • โœ… They're using Google, Reddit, or asking in communities for help
    • โŒ You have to educate them about why they need a solution

๐Ÿ“ฆ Product Solution ๐Ÿ“ฆ

  1. Do users' eyes light up when you describe your solution?

    • โœ… They immediately ask when they can try it
    • โŒ They politely say "that's interesting"
  2. Can early users no longer imagine life without your product?

    • โœ… They get anxious at the thought of you shutting down
    • โŒ They could easily switch back to their old solution
  3. Do users understand your product in under 30 seconds?

    • โœ… They can explain what you do to others
    • โŒ They need multiple examples to grasp the concept

๐Ÿ“ˆ Growth Signals ๐Ÿ“ˆ

  1. Are users coming back weekly (at minimum)?

    • โœ… You see consistent, unprompted usage
    • โŒ You need to remind people to use your product
  2. Do users genuinely want to tell others about you?

    • โœ… They're sharing without incentives
    • โŒ You need referral programs to drive word-of-mouth
  3. Is your growth mostly organic?

    • โœ… People find you through recommendations
    • โŒ Growth stops when you stop marketing

๐Ÿ’ฐ Business Viability ๐Ÿ’ฐ

  1. Do users convert to paying customers without hesitation?

    • โœ… The price feels like a no-brainer to them
    • โŒ They need discounts or long sales cycles
  2. Does each new customer cost less to acquire than they pay you?

    • โœ… Your unit economics work without "scale"
    • โŒ You're hoping costs will decrease eventually
  3. Could you be profitable if you stopped growing?

    • โœ… The core business works without venture capital
    • โŒ You need funding to make the model work

๐Ÿ“š Scoring Guide ๐Ÿ“š

  • 10-12 Yes: Strong product-market fit. Focus on scaling.
  • 7-9 Yes: You're onto something. Fix the gaps in your weak areas.
  • 4-6 Yes: Promising foundation but major pivots needed.
  • 0-3 Yes: Time to go back to customer discovery.

Wrap-up

Product-market fit isn't a checkbox โ€“ it's a constant pursuit. Scored low? Use this as your roadmap for what to fix next. The best founders aren't perfect from day one; they're just faster at spotting and solving the right problems. Run this test monthly, and watch your understanding of your market sharpen with each iteration.
